Mount Zion Church Joins Fredericksburg Cancer Walk

On Saturday, October 4, members of Mount Zion Church proudly participated in the Power of Pink Breast Cancer Walk in Fredericksburg, VA. The event, hosted by the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation, drew hundreds of supporters to raise funds for breast cancer care and awareness.

Representing our congregation were Nurse Geri Short, the dedicated Health & Wellness Ministry team, Andre’ Blackwell, and Rev. Angelo Giles. Together, they joined the 2.2-mile walk around the Mary Washington Hospital campus, standing in solidarity with survivors and families affected by breast cancer.

The walk featured vibrant pink attire, community fellowship, and a shared commitment to health and hope. Proceeds from the event benefit the Mary Washington Breast Cancer Fund, supporting patients in need.

Mount Zion celebrates these participants for embodying our mission of service and wellness. Thank you for making a difference! Check out the photos below captured at this event.

Mount Zion Members Honored for Outstanding Community Service

Mount Zion Members Honored for Outstanding Community Service

Spotsylvania, VA — September 27, 2025

On a joyful Saturday afternoon, five dedicated members of Mount Zion Baptist Church were honored by the Spotsylvania Branch of the NAACP for their unwavering commitment to community service. Rev. Dr. Patricia Wormley, Minister John Richards, Trustee Sister Vikki Lewis, Trustee Sister LaShawn Lee, and Brother Andre Blackwell received awards and service certificates recognizing their contributions, leadership, and support of the NAACP’s mission to uplift and empower the local community.

The awards were presented by NAACP President, Rev. Mozett “Moe” Petway, in a heartfelt ceremony that celebrated not only individual achievements but the collective spirit of service that defines Mount Zion’s outreach.

A special recognition was given to Minister John Richards, who was named NAACP King of Community Service and Fundraising—a prestigious honor bestowed upon select citizens of Spotsylvania County. Minister Richards, known for his humility and tireless work, has been a pillar of support for organizations such as the Spotsylvania Sunday School Union, the NAACP, and Mount Zion Baptist Church. His life is a living testimony of faith in action, showing how God moves through His people to serve beyond the four walls of the church.

As Scripture reminds us in Galatians 6:9–10 (NIV):

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people…”

A special recognition was also extended to Brother Andre Blackwell, a devoted youth of Mount Zion Baptist Church, who does not think it robbery to donate his time and energy to the NAACP and other community causes. Andre is on a special path to greatness, actively participating in awareness walks for Alzheimer’s and cancer, as well as supporting fundraisers and community action initiatives throughout Spotsylvania County. His servant heart and willingness to contribute reflect the next generation of leadership rising within our church. Praise God for Andre’s commitment to service and his inspiring example!

Mount Zion celebrates these honorees with gratitude and pride, knowing that their service reflects the heart of Christ and the mission of the church to be a light in the community. Praise God for His continued work through His faithful servants!

SERMON Title "Occupy Until I Come" text Luke 19:12-23. | preached word of God by Rev. Dr. Charles W. Wormley, Pastor

In Luke 19:12–23, Jesus tells a parable about a nobleman who entrusts his servants with money before leaving to receive a kingdom, expecting them to invest and grow it in his absence. Upon his return, he rewards those who multiplied their minas with authority over cities but rebukes the servant who hid his mina out of fear, calling him wicked and irresponsible. The nobleman emphasizes that even minimal effort, like earning interest at a bank, would have been better than doing nothing. The parable illustrates the importance of faithful stewardship, accountability, and using God-given gifts to serve His kingdom.

Holy Communion sunday Morning worship service | | sermon text luke 22:1-22. | preached word of god by rev. dr. charles w. wormley, pastor

Video Ministry Recording provided by Church School Superintendent Brother Robert Lucas.

Luke 22:1–22 recounts the beginning of Jesus’ final hours before His crucifixion. As the Passover approaches, religious leaders plot to kill Him, and Judas agrees to betray Him for money. Jesus sends Peter and John to prepare the Passover meal, giving them specific instructions. At the Last Supper, He expresses His longing to share this meal before His suffering, institutes the Lord’s Supper by breaking bread and sharing the cup as symbols of His body and blood, and reveals that one of the disciples will betray Him.

Strength in Weakness: A Reflection on 2 CORINTHIANS 12:7–10

In life, we often strive to overcome our weaknesses—to fix what’s broken, to hide what’s painful, to prove we’re strong. But in 2 Corinthians 12:7–10, the Apostle Paul offers a radically different perspective. He shares a personal struggle—a “thorn in the flesh”—that he pleaded with God to remove. Yet instead of healing, Paul received a deeper truth:

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

This divine response reframes weakness not as a liability, but as a sacred invitation. Paul’s thorn, whatever it may have been, became a reminder that God’s strength doesn’t depend on our perfection. It shines brightest when we surrender.

💬 What Does This Mean for Us?

  • We don’t have to hide our struggles. God meets us in them.
  • Grace is not earned—it’s given. And it’s always enough.
  • Our weakness is not the end of the story. It’s the beginning of God’s power at work.

Paul goes on to say, “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” This is not self-pity—it’s spiritual maturity. It’s the kind of faith that says, “Even when I’m hurting, I’m held.”

🙌 A Word of Encouragement

If you’re facing a thorn today—a health challenge, a family burden, a quiet grief—know that you’re not alone. God’s grace is sufficient. His power is not diminished by your pain; it is magnified through it.

Let us be a church that embraces one another’s weaknesses with compassion and celebrates the strength that comes from trusting in God’s grace.

sunday Morning worship service | sermon message "jesus sets things in order for his church" | sermon text St. Matthew 16:13-20| preached word of god by rev. dr. charles w. wormley, pastor

Video Ministry recording is provided by Sister Ruby Blackwell.

Matthew 16:13–20, Jesus asks His disciples who people say He is, then presses further: “Who do you say I am?” Peter responds with a bold declaration that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Jesus affirms Peter’s insight as divinely revealed and declares that upon this “rock” He will build His church, which will stand firm against the powers of death. He entrusts Peter with the “keys of the kingdom,” symbolizing spiritual authority to bind and loose on earth as in heaven, and instructs the disciples not to reveal His identity as the Messiah just yet.

sunday Morning worship service | sermon message "Carnality Can get in our way" | sermon text roman 14:14| preached word of god by rev. dr. charles w. wormley, pastor

Video Ministry Recording provided by Church School Superintendent Brother Robert Lucas

Romans 14:14 (from the New Testament of the Bible) is often quoted in discussions about personal convictions and Christian liberty. Here's how it reads in the New International Version (NIV):

"I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean."

Romans 14:14 challenges believers to move beyond carnal thinking (focused on self and fleshly desires) and embrace spiritual discernment, which prioritizes love, unity, and conscience.

sunday Morning worship service | Mount Zion Baptist Church School Quarterly Lesson | Isaiah's call and ministry| lesson text isaiah 6: 1-8, 38: 1-5| lesson introduction by rev. dr. charles w. wormley, senior pastor

Church Video Ministry recording provided by Church School Superintendent Brother Robert Lucas

Here are the two passages discussed from the Book of Isaiah in the Bible:

Isaiah 6:1–8 (The Call of Isaiah)

This passage describes the prophet Isaiah’s vision of God in the temple and his commissioning as a prophet.

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple.
2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: with two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.
3 And they were calling to one another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.
7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who …

Here is the passage you requested from Isaiah 38:1–5, which recounts King Hezekiah’s illness and God's response to his prayer:

Isaiah 38:1–5 (Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery)

1 In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, “This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.”
2 Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord,
3 “Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
4 Then the word of the Lord came to Isaiah:
5 “Go and tell Hezekiah, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will add fifteen years to your life.’”

sunday Morning worship service | sermon message "Watch Out For the Scammer." | sermon text john 10:10| preached word of god by rev. dr. Patricia wormley

Video Ministry video recording provided by Church School Superintendent Brother Robert Lucas

John 10:10 is a well-known verse from the Bible, spoken by Jesus. In the New International Version (NIV), it reads:

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

This verse contrasts the intentions of a thief—often interpreted as Satan or false teachers—with Jesus’ purpose. It emphasizes the abundant, meaningful life that Jesus offers to those who follow him.

Backpacks, bells and blessings: a prayer for the new school year

As the school bells ring and backpacks get packed (with at least some of the right supplies), we welcome a new season of learning, growth, and grace. Whether you're a student stepping into a new grade or an educator preparing lesson plans and coffee in equal measure, this time of year is sacred—and slightly chaotic.

Let’s be honest: some kids are excited, some are nervous, and some are just wondering how many days until Christmas break. Teachers are reviewing curriculum, organizing classrooms, and praying their coffee doesn’t run out before the first recess. And parents? Well, they’re somewhere between celebration and concern, hoping their child remembers to bring home something besides a half-eaten sandwich.

But in the midst of all the pencils, planners, and permission slips, we remember this truth from Proverbs 2:6:

"For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding."

This school year, we pray for wisdom—not just the kind that helps with math tests, but the kind that builds character, compassion, and courage. We pray for grace—not just for mistakes made on paper, but for the ones made in friendships and growing hearts.

To our students:
You are not just learning facts—you are discovering who God made you to be. May you walk into each classroom with confidence, curiosity, and kindness. And yes, may you remember your lunch.

To our educators:
You are not just teaching lessons—you are shaping lives. May you be filled with patience, creativity, and the occasional moment of quiet. May you know that your work matters deeply to God and to us.

🙏 A Prayer for the School Year

Lord, bless our students with joy in learning and strength in challenges. Bless our educators with wisdom, endurance, and laughter. May every hallway be filled with peace, every classroom with purpose, and every heart with Your presence. Amen.

Here’s to a year of growth, grace, and maybe even a few snow days.
